This guide will help you modify your SKS for XCR magazines. Once you are done, you will still be able to run OEM Magazine and use the original stock.
This job is best done on a mill but Dremel is perfectly fine if you have 30-45 minutes of patience and a grinding bit like this one.
As a step 1 modify the trigger group so that it does not obstruct the magazine by shaving down the protrusions in the front. DO NOT go all the way down to the pin. Leave ~2mm of material.
Shave off the lips of the bolt so that the bolt can clear the magazine feed lips.
Do not cut into the bolt face. Simply shave down to the level of the bolt walls the side “wings”
Unsure if you shaved down enough? Simply take a magazine and see if the bolt will fit between the feed lips.
Open up the action by shaving down the raised sections on the side and the lip in front of the barrel chamber.
When it comes down to how much to remove the raised sections – just go down to the point where the sections are in-line with the rest of the receiver.
Step 4 is optional buy highly recommended as it will preserve the bolt hold open functionality.
If you do not want to do this, you can simply remove the bolt hold open by removing the pin holding the bolt catch and removing the bolt catch.
If you do want to preserve bolt hold open, all you have to do is shave down about 1mm from the underside and the front of the bolt catch itself.
Stop frequently and check your work, don’t rush but done right, the process should not take more than 45 minutes to an hour.
